Samsung Galaxy S11 tipped to pack 108MP camera 

The next Samsung Galaxy S, likely to be called the Galaxy S11, “has a high probability of using a new 108MP sensor,” according to serial tipster Ice Universe. The tip raises more questions than it answers but at least, it confirms Samsung may be looking to up the megapixel count in its next high-end flagship – a first for Samsung. Samsung’s high-end flagship phones have done well keeping the megapixel count to 12MP – much like many other high-end flagship phones including those from Apple. But this is the first time we’re hearing something new and exciting. 

As for the questions, we don’t know if it’s going to be the same 108MP ISOCELL Bright HMX image sensor seen in the newly launched Mi CC9 Pro, or if it’s going to be a newer version – 2.0 if you may – with improved capabilities. The Galaxy S11 is also rumoured to include a 5x periscope zoom camera.  

The 108MP ISOCELL Bright HMX image sensor has been co-developed with Xiaomi which is why it is one of the first few companies to get access to it. The Mi CC9 Pro is the second phone from Xiaomi to get it – the first being the limited concept Mi Mix Alpha. Samsung is yet to launch a phone with a 108MP camera even though it’s the only one manufacturing the sensor. The 108MP ISOCELL Bright HMX image sensor shoots 27MP photos by default but can revert to full 108MP as and when required.  

The Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+, Galaxy S10e, and Galaxy S10 5G all have the same variable aperture primary rear camera – which is also pretty similar to what you got in last year’s Galaxy S9 from a pure specs point of view. It is a 12MP wide (77-degree field of view) sensor with variable f/1.5-f/2.4 aperture and dual pixel OIS. Dual aperture allows the Galaxy S10 (like the Galaxy S9 before it) to shoot photos with more detail in low light (f/1.5), and photos without any metering issues when lighting is more than adequate (f/2.4). 

The Galaxy S10e has dual rear cameras with a secondary 16MP ultra-wide (123-degree field of view) sensor with f/2.2 aperture and fixed focus. The Galaxy S10+ has triple rear cameras with an additional 12MP telephoto sensor with OIS. The Galaxy S10 has the same triple rear cameras as the Galaxy S10.
