That Samsung is building the perfect all-screen smartphone with an in-display selfie camera isn’t exactly breaking news – the company’s vice president of the display R&D group, Yang Byung-duk, has already confirmed that it is working on such a smartphone. The news has been further re-confirmed by South Korean media now, dropping some more information on how Samsung could go about designing this smartphone.

Samsung held on to the proverbial display bezel longer than any other rival – but, finally it succumbed to the notch-trend this year by launching its flagship Galaxy S10 phones with a punch-hole display. You can say, the next step in smartphone evolution for Samsung would be an in-display selfie camera that disappears behind its signature AMOLED panel. We’re already seeing more and more in-display tech flooding the smartphone industry – everything from the fingerprint scanner to the speaker/receiver grille (and sensors) is going in-display. The selfie camera following the same route won’t be surprising. But it will come, when it will come.

Although little is known about Samsung’s in-display selfie camera tech, the “technology can be developed to the extent that the camera hole is invisible and does not affect the functionality of the camera or the display,” according to a report

The same is true about a tentative timeline as to when we’ll see the tech in action. Should it be this year, the Galaxy Note 10 would be a logical bet although Samsung has shown that it isn’t shy of introducing uncharted innovations in its Galaxy A-series phones first – the Galaxy A8s was the first Samsung phone to ship with a punch-hole selfie camera, for instance, and only then the tech made its way to the Galaxy S10. Something similar could happen with its in-display selfie camera tech as well, you never know.

Regardless, the perfect all-screen and no-bezel smartphone isn’t too far off, now that smartphone makers have figured out a way to put all the essentials under the display – it won’t be long before the selfie camera is also met with the same treatment.
