The Galaxy Fold was first teased by Samsung at its annual developer conference in November last year. At this year’s annual developer conference, Samsung is showing off what could be its next foldable or something very close to it. Or nothing at all. We don’t know yet. The new foldable, which is a concept at this point of time, looks more like a flip phone and has clearly been designed to offer a more compact device that can fit into your pocket.

“This brand-new form factor that we’re now exploring will not only easily fit in your pocket, but it also changes the way you use your phone,” Sally Hyesoon Jeong, who is head of Framework R&D Group at Samsung's mobile communications, said while showing off the mock-up foldable flip phone on stage. No further details – hardware, possible pricing – were shared.

All we know is that device would fold in the middle like a clamshell, sort of like the Moto Razr. Motorola has already confirmed that it is bringing back the iconic Razr by the end of this year, only its 2019 avatar will be a smartphone and it will be foldable.

Samsung has been working extensively on the software side in the Galaxy Fold so users will be able to seamlessly transition between smartphone and tablet mode on it – Samsung particularly touts app continuity and the ability to run as many as three individual apps simultaneously. At its annual developer conference 2019 keynote, the company demoed One UI 2.0 (based on Android 10) and how it seems to have been designed with a special emphasis on large-screen and foldable devices. The update is already seeding in beta for the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 in select markets.

As for the concept shared by Samsung, it’s still very early days for this sort of technology which is possibly why Samsung didn’t have much to say about it on stage. But whatever be the case, Samsung isn’t giving up on foldables just yet even though its first foldable has had a pretty rocky start.
