5G has arrived, and even though the new standard is limited to a handful of markets for now, a whole new era in mobile communication technology has only just begun. South Korea has become the first country in the world to launch nationwide commercial 5G services and Samsung’s Galaxy S10 5G is the world’s first commercially available 5G phone.

South Korea's three key mobile carriers, SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus, hosted simultaneous launch events across Seoul to announce the availability of the Galaxy S10 5G – rolling out their 5G services alongside.

US telecom giant Verizon followed hours later, launching commercial 5G services in Chicago and Minneapolis - the Galaxy S10 5G will reportedly go on sale in the US on April 16.

Based on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 chipset (and using its X50 modem) the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G will bring 5G connectivity to the market – advantages ranging from the ability to download a 15-minute 1080p video in just 1 second, real-time gaming and advanced AR.

The Galaxy S10 5G will be available in two configurations – 8GB RAM and 256GB storage and 8GB RAM and 512GB storage. The base variant will cost KRW 1.39 million (roughly Rs 83,000).

“With speeds up to roughly 20 times faster than 4G networks, consumers on a 5G network can download a full season of a TV show in minutes, play graphics-rich cloud games, stream 4K video with virtually no lag and enjoy enhanced VR and AR experiences,” Samsung says.

“We are at the beginning of a new era where the incredible speed and connectivity of 5G becomes a reality, bringing the world closer to Samsung’s vision of connected living,” DJ Koh, who is president and CEO of IT & Mobile Communications Division, Samsung Electronics said while announcing the availability details of the Galaxy S10 5G. “We are proud of the work we’ve accomplished to bring our first 5G smartphone to market and look forward to bringing it to everyone around the world in the coming year.”

LG will be next in line – the LG V50 ThinQ 5G will be available for buying in Korea from April 19 at a price of KRW 1.19M (roughly Rs 73,000).
