Transsion Holdings-backed Tecno is following up its crazy affordable triple camera-toting Camon i4 with an even crazier phone, the Phantom 9. Launched in India on Wednesday, Tecno’s Phantom 9 is the most affordable phone in the market now, to come with an in-display fingerprint scanner for biometric authentication. But that’s just one piece of the Phantom 9 puzzle – there's so much more to like here, even more so when you find out, the thing costs just Rs 14,999.

Joining the trend of fancy gradient designs, the Phantom 9 comes with what Tecno calls Lapland aurora – a colour-shifting aesthetic that’s also infused with nano-holographic lines which makes the phone stand out from the crowd. Tecno says it is using an anti-fingerprint coating here which makes it resistant to smudge. It’s still all plastic on the inside though.

On the front, the Phantom 9 has a 6.4-inch 1080p+ AMOLED display (600 nits brightness) and a waterdrop-style notch. There’s an in-display fingerprint scanner up-front, making the Phantom 9 the first phone at its price point to have such a setup.

Under the hood, the Phantom 9 has an octa-core MediaTek Helio P35 processor paired with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage which is also expandable. The dual-SIM phone runs Android 9 Pie-based Hi OS 5 which is Tecno’s custom skin – one of its India-specific features include AI beauty feature for WhatsApp video calls. The phone further packs a 3,500mAh battery with micro-USB charging.

The Phantom 9 has three cameras on the rear which is a step-up from the three cameras on the Camon i4 - there’s a primary 16MP camera with f/1.85 aperture, an 8MP wide-angle camera with 120-degree field-of-view (that’s also capable of shooting macros or 2.5cm extreme close-ups), and a 2MP camera for depth sensing aka portrait photography. On the front, the Phantom 9 has a 32MP camera with two flash modules and support for Apple-inspired Animojis.

The Tecno Phantom 9 will be available for buying in India from online retail website Flipkart from July 17. At its price, the Tecno Phantom 9 will compete with phones like the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro and Realme 3 Pro, as well as the Samsung Galaxy M30.

“India is a top priority market for us as a part of overall expansion plans for South Asia region. In H2, our key focus will be to expand the global portfolio in India. Out of which ‘Phantom’ has been our flagship product globally by virtue of its innovative features that validate our R&D prowess. We will introduce some of our other global series soon. Additionally, we will also be developing ‘India-first’ product portfolio basis local consumer insights,” Marco Ma, who is Chief Operating Officer, Transsion India said in a press statement.
