A new bug has been discovered in the iPhone that crashes its user interface (UI) after you say the word "hyphen" five times using voice input. According to cybersecurity and anti-virus company Kaspersky, perhaps the bug was introduced in a recent version of iOS and it only seems to affect certain models including iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Max, iPhone 8, iPhone X and iPhone XS Max with iOS 12.1.

There had been a consistent belief that saying the word "hyphen" five times using voice input would crash the iPhone launcher. Therefore, Folks over at Kaspersky put the theory to test only to find out that the bug indeed crashes the iPhone launcher after saying the word "hyphen" five times using voice input. But it asserts the bug doesn't seem to affect the iPhone SE with iOS 10.3.1.

"So, yes, something happens. It looks like saying “Hyphen” five times crashes the iOS launcher, bringing you to the home screen. But the phone works just as it did before, with no information lost, so we can safely assume that saying “hyphen” five times to your iPhone is safe, and you can try it yourself if you want," said Kaspersky in a blog post.

The video shows saying “Hyphen” five times crashes the iOS launcher and brings users to the home screen. However, the phone bug is not serious and the iPhone works just fine. Furthermore, it doesn't cause any information lost either.

How to check if this trick works with your iPhone

If you want to find out whether this trick works with your iPhone, you can create a text note, switch to voice input and say “hyphen” five times to check. All of the text in the note should remain intact even after the launcher crashed. As a result, this is unlikely to result in any kind of data loss.
