If you are using WhatsApp on some of the extremely old phones out there, we have bad news for you. Facebook-owned popular instant messaging app WhatsApp will stop working on certain handsets and operating systems. So if you are using, let’s say, a phone running on Nokia’s S40 platform, you need to change or upgrade the handset to something new. But hey, it’s not just the Nokia S40. In fact, WhatsApp will put an end to support for certain other handsets as well. We take a look.

Nokia S40

Gone are the days when Nokia’s classic series 40, also known as S40, ran on Nokia’s broad range of mid-tier feature phones such as the Asha line. Back in 2012, Nokia announced that it sold over 1.5 billion Series 40 devices. But given the advent of Android, the sale of Nokia’s feature phones took a hit and eventually, the company stopped selling S40 based feature phones in the country. So if you are still using one of the S40s, do remember that you can’t use WhatsApp after December 31.

Android

Similar to Nokia S40 platform, certain Android phones will also be barred from using WhatsApp. The app will stop working on Android phones running on Android 2.3.7 Gingerbread and older after February 1, 2020. Meaning, only those phones running Android 4.0 and above will use WhatsApp. However, this should not impact the majority of users. According to Statista, only 0.3 per cent of Android phones are running Android Gingerbread right now.

iOS

Of course, iPhones are going to be no exception here. WhatsApp will also stop working on devices running on iOS 7 or older after February 1, 2020. Apple announced iOS 7 initially with the iPhone 5s. So if you want your WhatsApp to continue running uninterrupted in the future, it’s time for an update now.
