Xiaomi is gearing to launch the selfie-centric Redmi Y3 in India on April 24 – and unless Xiaomi announces it anywhere else before that, India will be the first market to get the Redmi Y3. Ahead of launch, Xiaomi has teased a couple of key aspects of the Redmi Y3 – it has already confirmed that the Redmi Y3 will come with a 32MP selfie camera, and a waterdrop-style notch.

According to Xiaomi, the Redmi Y3 will come with a gradient design – whether it will have a glass body like the Redmi Note 7/Redmi Note 7 Pro is yet to be seen. The Redmi Y1 and Redmi Y2 both came with a polycarbonate body – a gradient finish will surely be a step-up. Additionally, the Redmi Y3 will come with a 4,000mAh battery which is again a big step-up from the Redmi Y1 and Redmi Y2, both of which came with a 3,080mAh battery.

Clearly, Xiaomi is looking to up its game here – by launching a Redmi Y3 with a modern design, bigger battery and more megapixels in the selfie camera department (the Redmi Y3 will likely use Samsung’s GD1 image sensor that uses pixel binning to produce 8MP effective photos. The same sensor is used by Vivo in the Vivo V15 Pro).

Xiaomi’s Redmi Y-series focuses entirely on the selfie camera – although, last year’s Redmi Y2 also came with some interesting dual rear cameras. Both the Redmi Y2 and the Redmi Y1 before it, came with a 16MP front camera. And now, Xiaomi is looking to take things up a notch with the Redmi Y3 by outfitting it with a whopping 32MP selfie camera.

All Y-series phones have hovered around the Redmi Note price point – which is around Rs 10,000 and should that be the case with the Redmi Y3, it would be a first for any budget smartphone to have a 32MP front camera at its low price. It won’t be surprising though - Xiaomi literally stunned the world by launching the Redmi Note 7 Pro with 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor in India for Rs 13,999.
