Xiaomi may be planning to build a truly bezel-less phone with four curved edges

The result, if Xiaomi can pull this off, would be truly bezel-less with the selfie camera and sensors buried deep within the display

Xiaomi has patented a new kind of bezel-less smartphone display at the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) that comes with four curved edges. It’s like the Samsung Galaxy S, only Xiaomi is eyeing to curve the top and bottom ends as well. The result, if Xiaomi can pull this off, would be truly bezel-less with the selfie camera and sensors buried deep within the display.

Xiaomi has gone to great lengths to build the perfect all-screen smartphone. From putting the selfie camera in an awkward bottom bezel in the Mi Mix and Mi Mix 2S to using a magnetic slider in the Mi Mix 3, Xiaomi has done it all. It has gone to notch town as well. But none of its efforts have come to achieve the perfect solution. The patent that it has filed for could change that.

This patent envisions a smartphone that is all-screen thanks to its four curved edges. There is no word if this could be a gradual progression of the Mi Mix 3 or a phone with a punch-hole selfie camera. The phone, as per the patent, has no openings whatsoever on the front leaving things largely to the imagination. On the back, it is seen sporting dual cameras with LED flash. There is a charging port (possibly USB Type-C) at the bottom.

That’s all that there is to it for now. We do not even know if Xiaomi would ever go ahead and turn the patent into an actual product, concept or otherwise, but it does raise the possibility of a near ‘hole-less’ Xiaomi phone in line with the Vivo Apex 2019 and the Meizu Zero.

In related news, Xiaomi is gearing to launch the 5G variant of the Mi Mix 3 on February 24 ahead of MWC 2019. Rumour has it that the Mi Mix 3 5G will be accompanied by the Mi 9, Xiaomi’s true-blue 2019 flagship. The Mi 9 is said to come with three rear cameras, a 48MP main camera with Sony IMX586 sensor (the same sensor found inside the Honor View 20), a 12MP secondary sensor and another Time-of-Flight camera for 3D depth mapping. On the front, the Mi 9 will reportedly pack a 24MP selfie camera embedded into a tear-drop style notch.

The Xiaomi Mi 9, in all probability, will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor.
