Hack:

  • Xiaomi will launch the Mi 9 phone on February 20
  • The Mi 9 will come with a triple camera setup on the back

Why should the leaksters have all the fun? That’s possibly why multiple Xiaomi executives (including CEO Lei Jun) have taken the onus to leak their next-generation flagship Mi 9 themselves. Ahead of the phone’s official February 20 launch, Xiaomi has already shown the world what the Mi 9 looks like (from the behind, and partially from the front), as well as confirmed its key specs.

Let’s start with the design. The Mi 9 will use copious amounts of glass (and stainless steel) and will be available in both solid and gradient colours. Xiaomi is using what it calls a “nano-level laser engraving holographic technology plus dual layer nano coating” to create a light-bending effect in the gradient blue and gradient pink variants of the Mi 9. The phone will be also available in solid blue and solid black for those who like to keep things subtle.

The Mi 9 will come with a triple camera setup on the back, consisting of a 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor (same as the Honor View 20), a 12MP tele-photo sensor with f/2.2 aperture for 2X optical zoom, and a 16MP ultra-wide sensor with f/2.2 aperture and a117-degree field-of-view. The triple camera module will be protected by Sapphire glass, Xiaomi has confirmed.

Xiaomi isn’t showing off the Mi 9’s front just yet. Well it is, but only partially – but that’s enough to confirm two aspects. The Mi 9 will come with an in-display fingerprint scanner like last year’s Mi 8 Explorer Edition and Mi 8 Pro and it will have a reduced chin (at 3.6mm, it will be 40 per cent smaller than the Mi 8’s, according to Xiaomi). Although we do not know about the nature of the notch (should there be one), Xiaomi says the Mi 9 will come with a 20MP front camera. P.S. rumor has it that the Mi 9 will come with a waterdrop/teardrop style notch like the Redmi Note 7.

Lastly, Xiaomi has also confirmed that the Mi 9 will be powered by Qualcomm’s latest and greatest Snapdragon 855 processor.

In related news, a new report doing the rounds of the internet suggests that Xiaomi will launch the Mi 9 at a starting price of CNY 2,499 (6GB RAM, 64GB storage) which roughly translates to Rs 26,000. Xiaomi is also reportedly working on an Explorer edition of the Mi 9 with a translucent back (and as many as four rear cameras) that will be priced at CNY 5,999 (roughly Rs 63,000).

Xiaomi will launch the Mi 9 phone on February 20 in China and will likely show it off to a wider audience at MWC 2019 in Barcelona where it is also slated to release a 5G-ready version of the Mi Mix 3. Xiaomi has been shy of bringing its flagship Mi phones to India, so we will have to keep our fingers crossed on this one.
