Looks like Xiaomi isn’t waiting until D-day (which is February 20) to reveal its next-generation Mi 9 flagship phone. Multiple Xiaomi executives (including CEO Lei Jun) have been literally handing out Mi 9 ‘secrets’ over the internet, so much so that the Mi 9 isn’t even a secret anymore. Everything about the Mi 9 is already known, and because all this information has been coming straight from the horse’s mouth, well, this is it.

Last year’s Mi 8, which was also Xiaomi’s eighth anniversary flagship, had multiple variants including one with a translucent back. The Mi 9, that Xiaomi will launch on February 20, will also have multiple variants. Two of these variants have already been confirmed by the company – these are the vanilla Mi 9 and the Mi 9 Transparent Edition. The Mi 9 Transparent Edition will be a follow up to last year’s Mi 8 Explorer Edition. Xiaomi is partnering with the makers of the Hollywood cyberpunk action film, Alita: Battle Angel, on this one to seemingly make it stand out as a limited-edition product. There could be more variants of the Mi 9, but this is all the information that we have for now.

Ahead of the Mi 9 and Mi 9 Transparent Edition official February 20 launch, Xiaomi has already revealed what both the phones looks like, as well as confirmed their key specs. Here’s everything to know about Xiaomi’s upcoming flagship phones.

Xiaomi Mi 9, Mi 9 Transparent Edition design

The Mi 9 will use copious amounts of glass (and stainless steel) and will be available in both solid and gradient colours. Xiaomi is using what it calls a “nano-level laser engraving holographic technology plus dual layer nano coating” to create a light-bending effect in the gradient blue and gradient pink variants of the Mi 9. The phone will be also available in solid blue and solid black for those who like to keep things subtle.

The Mi 9 will be Xiaomi’s first high-end phone to come with a teardrop/waterdrop-style notch on the front. The Mi 9 will come with an optical in-display fingerprint scanner and it will have a reduced chin (at 3.6mm, it will be 40 per cent smaller than the Mi 8’s, according to Xiaomi). An in-screen fingerprint reader was exclusive to the Explorer and Pro variants of the Mi 8, but this year, even the vanilla flagship is getting it. The whole setup will entail in a screen-to-body ratio of a whopping 90.7 per cent, as per Xiaomi.

The company also says that it is using a “highly sensitive in-screen ambient light sensor” and “improved ultrasonic proximity sensor” which basically means all your key sensors will be buried under the display in the Mi 9.

The Mi 9 Transparent Edition, just like the Mi 8 Explorer Edition, will house a cosmetic motherboard above the actual circuitry to create an optical illusion – that you’re seeing its insides, and that its insides are as perfectly aligned as they should.

Xiaomi Mi 9, Mi 9 Transparent Edition specs and features

The Mi 9 will come with a Samsung-sourced 1080p+ Super AMOLED display with 600nits of brightness. Xiaomi doesn’t mention the screen size, but it should be greater than 6-inches. The Mi 8 and the Mi 8 Explorer Edition both came with a 6.21-inch screen, so something similar is expected from the successors as well.

The Mi 9 will further be protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 6, which is the latest and greatest version of Gorilla Glass available in the market right now.

Unsurprisingly, the Mi 9 will be powered by Qualcomm’s latest and greatest Snapdragon 855 processor. The phone will pack Xiaomi’s game turbo tech, that is said to “predict gaming scenes and intelligently allocate resources for complicated scenes.”

On to the optics, the Mi 9 will come with a triple camera setup on the back, consisting of a 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor (same as the Honor View 20), a 12MP tele-photo sensor with f/2.2 aperture for 2X optical zoom, and a 16MP ultra-wide sensor with f/2.2 aperture and a117-degree field-of-view. The triple camera module will be protected by Sapphire glass, Xiaomi has confirmed.

Lastly, the Mi 9 will come with USB Type-C for charging and data syncing and a mono speaker out.

Xiaomi Mi 9, Mi 9 Transparent Edition launch date, expected price

A new report doing the rounds of the internet suggests that Xiaomi will launch the Mi 9 at a starting price of CNY 2,499 (6GB RAM, 64GB storage) which roughly translates to Rs 26,000. The Mi 9 Transparent Edition will reportedly be priced at CNY 5,999 (roughly Rs 63,000).

Xiaomi will launch the Mi 9 phone on February 20 in China and will likely show it off to a wider audience at MWC 2019 in Barcelona where it is also slated to release a 5G-ready version of the Mi Mix 3. Xiaomi has been shy of bringing its flagship Mi phones to India, so we will have to keep our fingers crossed on this one.
