Xiaomi has launched the Redmi 8, a budget phone with a bold new look and 18W USB Type-C charging, in India at a starting price of Rs 7,999. The Redmi 8 comes close on the heels of the Redmi 8A, a phone that also shares many of its features and costs even less. Simply put, the Redmi 8A should get the job done for most users. But if you’re looking for more and have a couple of thousand rupees to spare, you’ll be better off buying the Redmi 8. So much so that it won’t be wrong to call the Redmi 8, the Redmi 8A Pro.

A quick recap of the Redmi 8 specs - the phone in question comes with a 6.22-inch 720p+ LCD display with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection and an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 439 processor paired with up to 4GB RAM and up to 64GB storage which is also expandable via a dedicated micro-SD card slot. The dual SIM phone runs Android 9 Pie-based MIUI 10 software.

There’s a sizeable 5,000mAh battery inside and USB Type-C port for charging and data syncing – with support for 18W fast charging although Xiaomi isn't bundling a fast charger in the box.

The Redmi 8 comes with dual rear cameras consisting of a 12MP main camera with Sony’s IMX363 sensor and f/1.8 aperture, and another 2MP camera for portrait photography. On the front, the Redmi 8 comes with an 8MP camera.

Xiaomi will sell the 4GB/64GB variant of the Redmi 8 for a limited period (5 million units) at a discounted price of Rs 7,999. Xiaomi says that all those who order the 3GB/32GB variant will also be automatically upgraded to the 4GB/64GB variant in that period. The Redmi 8 will be available for buying from Mi.com and Flipkart from October 12. The phone will be available in Onyx Black, Ruby Red, Sapphire Blue and Emerald Green colours.
