Xiaomi recently confirmed that it will be the first OEM to launch a MediaTek Helio G90T-based phone in India. It has now been confirmed that, that phone in question could well be the upcoming Redmi Note 8 Pro. Xiaomi is set to launch its Redmi Note 8 series phones – Redmi Note 8 and Redmi Note 8 Pro – in China on August 29 and has been dropping Easter eggs confirming key specs for a while now. One of these phones – likely the Redmi Note 8 Pro - will also get a 64MP main camera on the back.

MediaTek’s newly announced Helio G90 mobile chips (Helio G90 and Helio G90T) have seemingly been designed to bring high-end gaming experiences to mid-tier devices. Both the chips come with an octa-core CPU with ARM Cortex-A76 and A55 cores clocked at up to 2.05GHz, and a Mali G76 GPU. These support up to 10GB of LPDDR4x RAM and up to a maximum of four rear cameras including support for a 64MP shooter. The Helio G90 and Helio G90T will also be the first mobile chips from MediaTek to come with their new HyperEngine technology that has been designed from ground up to boost gaming performance.

As for the 64MP main camera, the Redmi Note 8 series will use Samsung’s 64MP GW1 sensor. Samsung’s 64MP GW1 sensor works on the same principle as its 48MP GM1 and 32MP GD1 sensors – effectively producing sharper, more detailed 16MP photos in low light, and using software interpolation to produce high resolution 64MP photos as and when required. The GW1 sensor will theoretically be able to outputs 64MP photos with a resolution of 9248 x 6936 pixels (and up to 19MB in size) but its real advantage will come in the form of brighter, more detailed low light photos when shooting at default 16MP.

While nothing has been announced yet, Xiaomi has confirmed that it will launch phone(s) with a 64MP main camera and Helio G90T in India by the end of this year, there’s a very high possibility that we’re looking at the same phone, and not two different ones. And that phone could well be the Redmi Note 8 Pro.

It seems Xiaomi is kickstarting Redmi Note 8-series proceedings with China but going by history, both the Redmi Note 8 and Redmi Note 8 Pro should land in India soon enough.

Ahead of launch, Xiaomi has also shared much of the design scheme of the upcoming Redmi Note 8 series – a design that seems to be a mishmash of the Redmi K20 and the Mi A3.
