Xiaomi’s 48 MP Redmi Note 7 is now official, and USP of the device is potentially its 48 MP rear camera. The smartphone is rumoured to possess a sub-Rs 10000 price tag. Now, the smartphone comes with fairly impressive technical specifications; at least on paper; but cynosure of all eyes at least now is the 48MP snapper.

In this regard, it is worth checking out as to if the 48MP camera could really perform in the way it is claimed to do so; does a smartphone camera with higher megapixels necessarily translate into top-notch image quality.

A 48 MP camera smartphone is indeed fine and there are no qualms as it could theoretically result in support for comparatively greater resolution images. But, does  48MP camera necessarily render quality and the sharpest of images?

With today’s smartphones theoretically offering primary cameras; with the trend being 20 MP and higher; this has resulted in cut-throat competition amongst smartphone brands to offer users cameras (within handsets) that not only incorporate greater megapixels but claim to offer crystal-clear pictures.

Would a 48MP camera necessarily result in the best quality photos?

Here, it is worth understanding that quality of images/photos captured within any camera depends on the sensors that are incorporated within the camera. Now, a 48MP camera would necessarily require enhanced sensors to capture light and translate this to signals to render images. Here, pricing also matters, the best quality sensors always cost a premium; hence, it is worth noting that the pricing aspects of a 48 MP camera smartphone would likely lie on “premium” lines. At this point in time, pricing details of the new Xiaomi 48MP camera phone are yet to even surface.

Also, it is a known fact that sensors that are bigger in size obviously better capture light and in turn render comparatively better images. Hence, a multitude of DSLR cameras today despite featuring only a sub 10MP sensor tend to produce images that are superior in quality compared to those from smartphones possessing 20 MP cameras. Also, the former always has larger form factors which could be attributed to large sensors.

Fitment of sensors is also a key factor

Cramming camera sensors and upgrading the pixel density may not work considering the fact that under these circumstances there could be uneven rendering resulting in the generation of “issues” such as below par images, grains, blurring, and pixilated photographs.

Depends on the nature of usage

If you are amongst those users constantly outdoors and preferring to shoot through your high megapixel smartphone camera, rather than carry a heavy DSLR shooter around, resorting to increasingly crop what you have captured then it is imminent that you resort to a real-world test (in outdoor conditions) and check if your smartphone suits your style of capturing objects.

If you are a general everyday user, it should not hurt to properly check out the sensors within your smartphone’s camera and as for megapixels, know that more is not merrier!.
