Google wants its new music streaming service, aka YouTube Music, to be the default music player on all upcoming Android phones shipping with Android 10 and Android 9. Google has announced that YouTube Music will now come pre-installed on all new Android 10 and Android 9 phones - replacing Google Play Music. There’ll still be an option to manually download Google Play Music on these phones, but Google is really pushing YouTube Music as its default choice for the future here.

“Music listeners on Android devices are now just a few taps away from streaming their go-to tracks and discovering new music,” Google says, adding that “music fans on Android phones can now easily unlock the magic of YouTube Music, which will come installed on all new devices launching with Android 10 (and Android 9), including the Pixel series.” Clearly, the Pixel 4 looks all set to be the first smartphone to come with the new setup, unless something else comes up in the interim.

YouTube Music - what's the deal

Google launched YouTube Music in March. Google’s new music streaming app is not the only music streaming app vying for users’ attention – there are others. Android however gives the scale advantage which is why YouTube Music shipping as a default music player on upcoming Android phones doesn’t come as a surprise. Just like rivals, Google offers a free tier plus a more premium tier with YouTube Music. While the free tier is ad-supported, the more premium tier called YouTube Music Premium offers not only ad-free music, it also allows subscribers to play songs and videos in the background even when the app is directly not in use. YouTube Music Premium also offers offline downloads. In India, YouTube Music Premium is available for Rs 99 per month.

“YouTube Music is a reimagined, made-for-music app and web player with official songs, albums, thousands of playlists and artist radio plus YouTube’s tremendous catalog of remixes, live performances, covers and music videos that you can’t find anywhere else - all simply organized and personalized,” Google says about YouTube Music.
