PepsiCo Wanted To Advertise From Space With The Help Of Orbiting Satellites; Here’s What Happened

Billboards in the sky? A Russian start-up envisaged this innovative idea and one of the well-known companies in the world, PepsiCo even hopped on to the idea. However, the beverage giant has now clarified that they collaborated with the company to test the proposition, but it was a ‘one-time event.’

According to reports, a startup named StartRocket in January this year had opened up on its plan to showcase advertisements in the sky by launching mini satellites called CubeSats from low-orbit earth. Once launched, the mini satellites would unveil reflective Mylar sails that would reflect sunlight on the earth. The grid thus formed could create the names of the brands that would partner with the company. 

Following the move, a representative from PepsiCo revealed that the partnership with the Russian company was on and such a ‘’sky billboard’ could be possible for their upcoming beverage Adrenaline Rush by 2021, as per reports. The company had then expressed confidence in the ‘StartRocket potential’ and that orbital billboards are ‘revolution on the market of communications.’ 

However, as per reports, PepsiCo has now opted out of the revolutionary proposal. As stated by a spokesperson for the brand in an interview to a portal, the company confirmed that an ‘exploratory test’ was performed by StartRocket for ‘stratosphere advertisements’ featuring their new product’s logo.

However, it clarified that the partnership on the test was only a ‘one-time event’ and that the company doesn’t plan to conduct furthers tests regarding the same or use the technology for commercial use in the future. 

StartRocket is yet to comment regarding the tie-up with PepsiCo over the satellite billboards.

While the proposal has been termed innovative, space experts expressed their concerns over it by stating that such ideas would lead to space debris and light pollution. However, many of them stated that such a technology was ‘’imminent’ in the future and though PepsiCo decided against coming on board, some other company might join in the endeavour in the future.
