Twitter's desktop website just became more like its mobile app as the microblogging social networking service has officially redesigned its desktop website with a mobile app-like interface, new themes and new features such as dark mode. Twitter claims its redesigned website is faster, easy to navigate and more personalised. Twitter is rolling out new, fresh looks of its desktop site to all users irrespective of their geographical location.

Twitter also says that its website now has updated look and feel that's more consistent with Twitter on other devices like mobile and tablets. Numerous studies have shown in the past that about 80 per cent of Twitter consumption takes place via mobile devices. Hence, Twitter may be streamlining its user interface and experience to some extent across all the devices.

"The site has an updated look and feel that is more consistent with the Twitter you see on other devices, making it easier to access some of your favorite features, and with more options to make it your own," Twitter said in its official blog post.

Twitter has been testing a redesigned desktop site for quite some time now to learn more about the user's experience and feedback about it.

"Thanks to hundreds of thousands of responses we received during those tests,’s features make conversations easier to find and follow – and just a bit more fun," Twitter added.

What's new with the new Twitter desktop site?

Explore what's happening! Twitter brings the new Explore tab (similar to a search option on the mobile app) so that you can discover real-time trends and stories that you may find more interesting. Twitter also says you can expect more live video and local moments personalised just for you.

Twitter now boosts the visibility of other tabs such as Bookmarks, Lists and your Profile and brings them all on the front for easy discovery and navigation. Additionally, expanded Direct Messages let users see their conversations and send messages within the same window.

Dark Mode: Last but not least, Twitter now lets users customise the appearance of its desktop site and offers new Dark Mode option. You can customise the background with the help of options like Default, Dim and Lights out, in addition to colours and font size.
