No, Twitter doesn't notify you when someone shares your tweet in Direct Message

Micro-blogging website Twitter has finally debunked a rumour that made some users believe that Twitter notifies them whenever someone shares their tweet in a Direct Message (DM). Over the last few days, a Twitter hoax has been making rounds across the platform claiming users will be notified if someone shares their tweet via a Direct Message (DM).

Recently, a verified Twitter user @Julian_Epp tweeted a screenshot claiming to show his notifications, reading: "Horse Girls For Bernie 2020 shared your Tweet in a Direct Message." In a subsequent tweet, @Julian_Epp posted another screenshot, this time claiming to show that the US president Donald J. Trump has shared his tweet. Do check out these hoax tweets below:

Now, putting an end to it, Twitter has intervened and clarified that is not true. Twitter also made a new post entry to its support page. Twitter has stated that it only notifies users when they receive new followers or Direct Messages (DMs).

"You might have heard chatter about a new update that sends you a notification when someone shares your Tweet in a Direct Message. This is not true. For a roundup of the types of notifications, we do send, check out our Help Center," Twitter clarified.

Epp (@Julian_Epp), the original creator of the viral tweet told the Daily Dot that he intended for the image to be a joke.

"It's very funny that Twitter had to put out a statement correcting a joke about a Horse Girls for Bernie 2020 account. But the fact that so many people believed that the feature could be real shows how many terrible features this site puts out"

The viral tweet comes amid Twitter's crackdown on misinformation, preventing fake news and misinformation from spreading on the platform. Earlier this year, Twitter started featuring tweets from 'credible sources' up high in search results to improve the quality of conversation on the platform.
