India today summoned the top Canadian envoy to register a strong protest after Canada named the Indian High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma as 'person of interest'. Ties between India and Canada have been thorny ever since Justin Trudeau alleged India's involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian Khalistani terrorist, in June 2023. India has strongly condemned Canada over allegations that the Indian High Commissioner was a 'person of interest' in a murder investigation, ascribing Ottawa's move to the Trudeau government's political agenda. Publicly condemning the Trudeau government for maligning India as part of its vote bank politics, New Delhi said that it now reserved the right to take further steps in response.
