Bengaluru: A shocking incident in Bengaluru has sparked outrage after a woman named Niti was harassed and assaulted by an auto driver after she cancelled her Ola ride. A video of the incident has gone viral, showing the driver attacking Niti’s phone and arguing with her while another man is seen on the driving seat, raising serious questions about the safety of women what is considered to be one of India's most cosmopolitan cities.

Niti shared her experience on X, saying, “Yesterday, I faced severe harassment and was physically assaulted by your auto driver in Bangalore after a simple ride cancellation. Despite reporting, your customer support has been unresponsive. Immediate action is needed.” She expressed her frustration that the ride-hailing company did not take her complaint seriously.

According to Niti, the situation worsened when the driver began verbally abusing her, questioning her actions, and making disrespectful remarks.

“The driver went on to verbally assault us, questioning whether the auto belonged to my father and making derogatory comments. I began recording, which enraged him further. When I mentioned reporting him, he challenged me, showing no fear of consequences,” she said.

The video shows the driver hitting Niti’s phone while she tried to record his aggressive behavior. This incident has caused a lot of anger on social media, with people demanding stricter action against such drivers to protect women passengers.

The Bengaluru City Police noticed Niti’s tweet and responded, asking her to share more details about the incident. “Please provide specific area details and your contact number via DM,” they wrote, indicating that they are looking into the matter.

Local groups, like the Bengaluru Citizens Group, also shared the video and voiced their concerns about women’s safety in the city. “Is this acceptable behavior of an auto driver? Harassing a female passenger! It’s becoming difficult for women to venture out alone in #Bengaluru,” they posted on Twitter, reflecting the fears of many residents.

This incident has not only highlighted the daily struggles women face but has also hurt Bengaluru’s reputation as a modern and safe city. Known for its tech industry and diverse culture, Bengaluru is often seen as a forward-thinking place, but such incidents show that safety issues for women still need urgent attention.

People are now demanding better safety measures and quicker action from ride-hailing companies to ensure that incidents like this do not happen again. Niti’s ordeal serves as a reminder that more needs to be done to protect women in Bengaluru, making sure the city lives up to its image as a safe and welcoming place for everyone.
