'Gobsmackingly bananas': Record-smashing heatwaves leave September sizzle

After the world struggled with heatwaves for the first half of 2023, scientists from the European climate agency said that the month of September was warmer than usual.

Calling it "mind blowing", researchers revealed that last month’s average temperature was 0.93 degrees Celsius (1.7 degrees Fahrenheit) above the 1991-2020 average for September.

“It’s just mind-blowing really,” said Copernicus Director Carlo Buontempo. “Never seen anything like that in any month in our records," he added.

While the researchers expected the July and August to be warmer, they are referring to the September figures as "the biggest anomaly".
