The Sudanese Prime Minister welcomed on Monday a decision by the Trump administration to remove Sudan from the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism.

The move could help the African country get international loans to revive its battered economy and end its pariah status.

Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok said during a news conference that Sudanese people have ''suffered from the cursed list for 27 years.''

He added that being on the U.S list of states sponsoring terrorism was a legacy of the ''deposed regime.''

Hamdok also announced that there will be an emergency meeting next week with countries members of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development to discuss the current situation.

Sudan is on a fragile transition to democracy following an uprising that led to the military’s ouster of former autocratic President Omar al-Bashir in April 2019.

The country is now ruled by a joint military and civilian government that seeks better ties with Washington and the West.

According to a Facebook post by the U.S Embassy in Khartoum, Sudan's removal was effective as of Monday.

A notification to that effect, signed by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, would be published in the Federal Register, it said, adding that the 45-day congressional notification period has lapsed.
