The Australian state of New South Wales on Sunday recorded 77 new locally acquired cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, according to authorities.

33 of these cases were in the community while infectious which prompted New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian to say on Sunday that it was "highly unlikely" the lockdown would end on Friday July 16.

55 of the new cases are linked to a known cluster.

Berejiklian also said on Sunday that she would be "shocked" to see "less than 100" additional cases on Monday.

The current COVID-19 outbreak in New South Wales has now reached 566 cases.

52 people infected with COVID-19 are in hospital.

15 people are in intensive care and five are on ventilators, and one person has died.

More than 48,000 tests were conducted in the past 24 hours to 8pm on Saturday.
