North Carolina Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson has announced a lawsuit against CNN, claiming the network's recent report alleging he made explicit racial and sexual comments on a pornography website’s message board is both reckless and defamatory. The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in Wake County Superior Court, follows a television report that has led many Republican officials, including presidential nominee Donald Trump , to distance themselves from Robinson’s gubernatorial campaign.

At a news conference in Raleigh, Robinson criticized CNN for what he described as irresponsible reporting. The lawsuit alleges that the network published the claims “despite knowing or recklessly disregarding” that Robinson’s personal data had previously been compromised in multiple data breaches. The report cited statements attributed to Robinson, which include derogatory remarks about historical figures and controversial opinions on various social issues.

CNN has declined to comment on the lawsuit, with spokesperson Emily Kuhn stating only that the network would not provide a response.

The fallout from the CNN report has already impacted Robinson's campaign, with polls indicating that Democratic challenger Josh Stein, the sitting attorney general, holds a significant lead. As early in-person voting begins statewide on Thursday, over 50,000 absentee ballots have already been completed, signaling a potentially challenging electoral landscape for Robinson.
