China said Monday the high-level face-to-face talks with the US were frank and they were conducive to sound development.

The talks began Monday in the Chinese city of Tianjin between the US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman and Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Xie Feng.

Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi is supposed to meet with Sherman later Monday.

During the talks, China submitted to the US a "remedial list" and a "list of key concerns", urging the US to "change course and correct its mistakes".

The two lists covered issues of conflicts between the two countries, including sanctions on individuals and enterprises, student visas, status of media outlets, origin of COVID-19, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Xinjiang, said Zhao Lijian, spokesperson of China's foreign ministry.

Sherman is the highest-ranking US official to visit China since President Joe Biden took office six months ago.

Relations between the countries deteriorated sharply under his predecessor, Donald Trump, and the two sides remain at odds over a host of issues including technology, cybersecurity, human rights and other issues.
