New drone footage released Thursday shows up-close activity atop the Cumbre Vieja volcano on La Palma.

Scientists with the Spanish geology institute filmed volcanic explosions containing pyroclastic fragments.

Pyroclastic fragments are caused when violent gas explosions inside the volcano cause magma to be shredded.

The fragments are classified into five different groups depending on size; dust being the smallest and bombs - the largest - measuring over 64mm.

The roaring audio taken during the recording gives an idea of the monumental power of the Cumbre Vieja volcano, that has now been active for over two months.

Around 85,000 people live on La Palma. Most of the island is unaffected by the eruption.

More than 7,000 people have been evacuated from their homes due to the threat from the rivers of lava.

The molten rock has covered more than 997 hectares (2,463 acres) and crushed or damaged more than 2,200 buildings.
