A European Parliament lawmaker has described receiving "thousands" of death threats after visiting the Czech Republic to look into the alleged misuse of EU funds involving a business empire founded by Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis.

Thomas Zdechovsky went to Prague on a fact-finding mission in February by the parliament’s budgetary control committee.

Addressing parliament on Thursday, he described the threats as "systematic" and said his family had to be given police protection as a result.

Zdechovsky was speaking ahead of a call issued by EU lawmakers Friday for an investigation into a possible conflict of interest involving Babis.

In a resolution, adopted by 510 votes to 53, the lawmakers said Babis “was and continues to be actively involved in the implementation of the EU budget in the Czech Republic in his position as Prime Minister … while still controlling the Agrofert Group as a founder and the sole beneficiary of two trust funds.”

The resolution was passed as Babis and other EU leaders debated the bloc's next multi-billion-euro budget. Babis denies any wrongdoing and has accused the EU of trying to destabilize his country.
