As Germany’s center-left Social Democrats and center-right bloc both laid claim on Sunday to lead the country's next government, German newspapers went into print after a very close race in the parliamentary election.

The country's biggest tabloid Bild will go on sale on Monday with the headline "Chancellor thriller", referring to the extremely close preliminary results between the Christian Democrat's candidate Armin Laschet and the Social Democrat's Olaf Scholz.

Most polls show the two less than one percentage point apart.

Other headlines pointed out the "Election chaos" in Berlin as several polling stations ran out of ballots.

Bild has a print run of roughly 1.24 million copies.
