Pope Francis in his customary Sunday address sent his prayers to the inmates killed during violence at a prison in Ecuador.

A recent battle between gangs in the Guayaquil prison had left at least 116 people dead and injured 80, in what authorities are calling the worst penitentiary massacre in Ecuador's history.

The Pope also mentioned the staff at the prison asking that "God help those who work every day to make prison life more human."

He went on to appeal for peace in Myanmar, and asked that those "who live there no longer wipe away tears of pain and death."

Recently, the United Nations urged unified regional and international action to prevent the crisis in Myanmar from becoming a large-scale conflict and multi-faceted catastrophe in the heart of Southeast Asia and beyond.

After a military takeover in the country security forces have engaged in wide-ranging and brutal repression of pro-democracy protesters, according to the U.N.
