A volcano on the Spanish island of La Palma continued erupting early Thursday, spewing lava into the air.

A glowing orange river of lava could be seen flowing down the volcano's slope under the night sky.

Some 946 houses in La Palma have been completely destroyed by the volcanic activity and nearly 100 more affected.

Farmers are struggling to keep the surviving banana plantations irrigated after lava flows destroyed roads and water pipes.

The volcanic eruption started on Sept. 19 and has forced the evacuation of over 6,000 residents of the island in the Canary Islands archipelago off the northwest coast of Africa.
