'Howdy, Modi': Revisiting PM's other foreign events that left a mark

'Howdy, Modi' is a grand event where PM Modi will be addressing Indian-Americans in Houston on Sept 22. Here are PM's five other significant foreign events

Howdy Modi, a community summit hosted by Texas India Forum (TIF) for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday at the NRG Stadium in Houston, is going to be a grand event where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be addressing the Indian-Americans. The event happens to be one of the many major foreign events that PM Modi has been a part of, during his term, so far. The event website mentions that the crowd turnout is expected to be the largest for any Indian Prime Minister and for a democratically elected foreign leader in the country with about 50,000 people expected to attend the event. The grand event is expected to be attended by hundreds of prominent business and community leaders from across America. 

The term 'Howdy' is commonly used in southwestern United States and is a shorthand for “How do you do?". The event which will see a 90-minute cultural extravaganza - "Woven: The Indian-American Story" - that will feature 400 artistes and community members from Texas and across the US will be followed by PM Modi's address to the gathering.

Additionally, one can clearly see the energy and enthusiasm of the Indian-Americans through the huge digital billboards on major highways across Houston welcoming Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Indian flags can also be seen fluttering outside their homes ahead of PM Modi’s arrival for the mega diaspora event.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has previously addressed similar gatherings on foreign lands. Here are some of the PM's other foreign events that left a mark on the global front.

PM's major other events

1. Paris Community event (2019)

Recently, PM Modi travelled to Paris and while he was on the trip, he addressed the community of Indians living in the French capital during a community event that was held in UNESCO headquarters. He was welcomed with great vigour by the crowd and received a very warm response to his address to the Indian audience.

Among other things, he talked about how India is stuck with the word 'temporary' and how he does not want that for the nation anymore. He also thanked the audience for being such a graceful face of the Indian land out in another country. The event received a lot of appreciation.

2. Event at Bahrain (2019)

PM Modi recently made a visit to Bahrain. The Bahrain cabinet welcomed him to the kingdom and said that the visit was a strong impetus to the long-standing friendly relations between the two countries. During the event, PM Modi felt welcomed enough by the audiences to pay tribute to former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who passed away while PM Modi was on his visit. The crowd stood in solidarity with the Prime Minister and India as a whole.

3. Wembley Stadium event (2015)

Addressing a massive gathering of the British-Indian Community at the Wembley Stadium in London, in the presence of UK Prime Minister David Cameron, the Prime Minister, in 2015, spoke of the great contributions of the Sikh community and of India's Sufi tradition.

During the event, he also recalled his meeting with the Sikh community in London and said that he shared their pain, understood their problems and was working to resolve them. While talking about the nation, he said that India is much bigger and far greater than what you see on TV screens and newspaper headlines. His speech bound the audience and held the crowd together all throughout the event.

4. Modi’s UAE event (2015)

PM Modi addressed a gathering of thousands at the Dubai cricket stadium in 2015, Modi’s speech during the event covered a range of topics from terrorism, the “new-look India.”

He also talked about the warm welcome that he received in the UAE and initiatives launched by his government for Indian expatriates.

5. Madison Square Garden (2014)

In 2014, PM Modi received a very enthusiastic reception in New York's famed Madison Square Garden where he was welcomed with love and affection. During the event, he reached out to the indo-Americans and appealed for the development of India’s economy.

He also ensured them that as long as the nation is under his leadership, it won’t have to look back. The event also saw the Prime Minister talking about his plans to simplify the immigration bureaucracy for Indians living abroad. The event was a huge success and carried the feel of a political rally, and the audience periodically broke out into chants of "Modi! Modi!"
