Muslims in Bangladesh celebrated the festival of Eid-al Fitr on Monday, joining prayers to mark the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan amid a virus pandemic.

Thousands joined the prayers in phases at Dhaka's main Baitul Mokarram mosque as authorities allowed them to enter in groups and prayers were held every hour.

Many waited in lines for more than an hour to enter the mosque.

As Bangladesh continued to report an upward trend in both numbers of new cases of infections and deaths from COVID-19, authorities asked people to avoid mass prayers in open fields where tens of thousands of worshippers gather during normal times.

The Muslim-majority nation of 160 million has banned big congregations but has allowed people to join prayers in mosques by maintaining safe distance.

On Monday, prayers were offered in more than 300,000 mosques across the country while many families prayed at home.

A total of 480 deaths due to COVID-19 have reported in Bangladesh.

The caseload surged to 33,610 after another 1,532 people tested positive on Sunday.
