It is the day to experience sunlight for the longest time with the shortest night of the year. The summer solstice, also known as midsummer occurs when one of the Earth's poles has its maximum tilt toward the Sun. 

It happens twice a year- on June in Northern Hemisphere and in December in Southern Hemisphere. For that hemisphere, the summer solstice is when the Sun reaches its highest position in the sky and is the day with the longest period of daylight.

This rare astronomical phenomenon grabs a lot of interest every year. People around the world wake up early to witness the first sunrise of this day and share pictures of the rising sun. This year was no exception. Several people around the world posted some beautiful images of the sunrise on social media as the day commenced.

As the summer solstice, there is also winter solstice, which occurs in the Northern hemisphere in December, every year. Opposite to the summer solstice, the winter solstice has the shortest day and longest night.
