Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg on Friday took part in the World Economic Forum in Davos, sending a message to world leaders that urgent action must be taken to address the climate emergency.

Speaking in a video message, the activist said promises that had already been made were "very far from being enough".

In her message Thunberg advocated implementing annual binding carbon budgets, which she said should be based on the best science.

"We can have as many meetings and summits as we want, but unless we treat the climate and ecological emergency like an emergency, no sufficient changes will be achieved," she said.

Organizers of the World Economic Forum, are holding a virtual gathering this week due to the coronavirus pandemic, with world leaders participating online.

Forum founder Klaus Schwab said the aim of the virtual Davos Agenda week meeting that started Jan. 25 is to restore trust and engage all stakeholders in business, government, civil society and beyond to help build a "more peaceful and prosperous post-corona era."

The live, in-person annual forum is expected to take place in Singapore this spring.
