Dozens of protesters were detained on Wednesday during a demonstration in Istanbul against the Turkish government's economic policy and the country's surging cost of living.

More than 30 demonstrators were arrested during the protest in the city's Kadikoy district, according to Associated Press journalists at the scene.

The protesters, who were mainly members of left-wing groups, chanted slogans urging for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and members of his government to resign.

The demonstration was held amid rising inflation that has severely eroded the public's purchasing power, high unemployment and a steep decline of the Turkish lira that followed a series of interest rate cuts.
