Gaza's militant Hamas rulers warned of a "direct and appropriate response" Wednesday after Israeli air strikes on Hamas targets overnight.

The Israeli strikes were in retaliation for rocket fire towards Israel the previous night that coincided with the signing of normalization agreements between Israel, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates at the White House.

Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassim said the militant group would not allow Israel to "continue its aggression without any direct and appropriate response".

The group wanted to make clear that "bombing is met with bombing," he said.

The latest clashes began with Hamas rocket fire into Israel on Tuesday evening, just as the ceremony in Washington was getting underway. Two Israelis were lightly wounded.

The barrage continued overnight, with sirens sounding across southern Israel.

Israel said five projectiles landed in open areas with the rest intercepted by the country's rocket defense system.

In response, the Israelis struck about 10 sites belonging to Hamas, including a weapons and explosives manufacturing factory, underground infrastructure and a military training compound.

The renewed exchange offered a stark reminder that the festive events in Washington would likely do little to change Israel's conflict with the Palestinians.
