A worried Kurdish mother urged Iraqi authorities and international organisations to help her son, who along with thousands of migrants has become stuck at the Belarusian-Polish border amid an escalating diplomatic crisis.

Adla Salim, a 45-year-old housewife from the city of Dohuk, said her 19-year-old son Sarkawt Ismat left Iraq for Belarus 12 days ago in the hope of reaching Europe.

"I have been stuck along with my colleagues here. They don't let us cross or go back," said Ismat on a call he made through his friend's phone.

"Now, do you want to come back to home?" Salim asked.

"I do, yes in nearest opportunity," replied the young man who said he has been beaten up while attempting to move on the Belarusian side of the frontier.

The border crisis between Belarus and the European Union, of which Poland is a member, has been simmering for months.

Top EU officials say the longtime authoritarian leader of Belarus, President Alexander Lukashenko, is luring thousands of migrants and refugees to Minsk with the promise of help to get to western Europe.
