Israeli Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Aviv Kochavi, on Sunday conducted a situational assessment following Friday's attempted shooting in the Northern West Bank region, as well as tension in Jerusalem and at the Gaza border.

On Friday, Israeli troops shot and killed two Palestinians and wounded a third after men opened fire on a Border Police base.

Police said the three attackers fired on the base near the northern West Bank town of Jenin.

The Border Police and an Israeli soldier opened fire in response, killing two of the men and wounding a third, who was taken to hospital.

The Chief of the General Staff ordered reinforcements of three battalions for the "Judea and Samaria" sector, according to an Israeli army statement.

The Israeli Chief of Staff's orders come after Palestinian protesters clashed with Israeli police during the holiest night of Ramadan.

Heightened police presence has been seen on the streets of east Jerusalem outside the Old City on Sunday, adding to already heightened religious tensions that have unleashed the worst unrest in the holy city in several years.
