Residents of Iraq's Kurdish region welcomed the arrival of 2022 with spectacular firework displays early on Saturday morning.

Thousands of people gathered in the major cities of Irbil and Sulaymaniyah to celebrate the start of the New Year.

The Kurdish region of northern Iraq is more prosperous than the rest of the conflict-scarred country, although there's growing unemployment and concern over corruption.
