After languishing 21 months in a Pakistani prison, Kulbhushan Jadhav met his mother and wife at Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad on Monday. The meeting, which lasted for 45 minutes, was held in a controlled environment. The room had three cameras for keeping a close watch on the meeting.

Contrary to the expectations, the meeting was not a private affair as a glass screen separated Kulbhushan Jadhav from his wife and mother. Kulbhushan spoke to his family via phone. Moreover, in one of the pictures a lady can be seen standing behind Kulbhushan’s mother. The lady is speculated to be an MoFA diplomat.

Kulbhushan Jadhav's wife and mother arrived in Islamabad on Monday afternoon.

Earlier on Monday, in a massive embarrassment to Pakistan Foreign Affairs Minister Khawaja Asif, hours after he told Geo TV that India has been granted consular access to Kulbhushan Jadhav, his own ministry has clarified that no such access has been granted.

Following the outrage from India, the Pakistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said that this is not consular access, it’s just an access given to Kulbhushan’s family to meet with him on humanitarian grounds.

Jadhav, 47, was sentenced to death by a Pakistani military court on charges of espionage and terrorism in April, following which India moved the ICJ in May. The ICJ halted his execution on India's appeal pending the final verdict by it.

Pakistan claims its security forces arrested Jadhav alias Hussein Mubarak Patel from its restive Balochistan province on March 3 last year after he reportedly entered from Iran. India, however, maintains that Jadhav was kidnapped from Iran where he had business interests after retiring from the Indian Navy.
