The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which was hiding in its prime hideout in the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) has resurfaced. Even though the Pakistani government confirmed its successes in the tribal region yet the TTP seems to again gain power. The organisation declared its comeback in the region with IED blasts and also warnings which are meant to create a sense of fear among women and children.

Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan resurfaces in Pakistan

Kunwar Khuldune Shahid for The Diplomat has recently reported several incidents involving the TTP operatives which are giving rise to terror in several Pakistani cities. The TTP agents were arrested from Faisalabad and Gujranwala recently. The terror-group was destroyed after Operation Zarb-e-Azb in 2014 but is again gaining power. It was reported in August that the TTP released several warnings which restricted the listening of music in the residential area of Miranshah, women were not allowed to step out on the street without a male accomplice and also a ban on the polio vaccination. The TTP also executed IED blasts in the tribal regions during the month of August. Shahid shared a message by TTP saying, “We remind you [residents] that similar statements issued by Taliban several times in the past had fallen on deaf ears, but this time we are going to take to task those who violate the Taliban order. There will be no use of DJs, neither inside the house nor in open fields and those ignoring the warning will be responsible for consequences."

Rising terror in Pakistan

The warnings are not restricted to women and children. The uprising terror-group has issued alerts for the health workers who are working with the polio vaccine to eradicate polio from the country. Pakistan this year reported 72 people struck with polio this year. The polio resurgence in Pakistan is a major concern already and TTP can make things worse. The Pakistani government has assured military presence and various military operations in the region, but its failure and rebound of TTP lead to criticism. The Pashtun Tahaffuz Movement (PTM), which is a political party has propagated the resentments against the military. The political party projects working in favor of the local people by highlighting their concerns and the shortcomings of the military offenses.

TTP and the Pakistani military

Shahid further quoted from Ayesha Siddiqa, the author of 'Military Inc.: Inside Pakistan's Military Economy', said that it's not unusual for TTP to resurface in the tribal region as there is support from the military, highlighting the connection between TTP and the military. The PTM was constantly trying to bring the issue to everyone’s notice. The writer believes that if Americans leave Afghanistan under the rule of the Taliban, Pakistan will be the worst affected. However, the Lieutenant-General Talat Masood said there is no intention of Pakistan to support the Afghan Taliban.

"They shouldn't let the Afghan Taliban become a dominant presence in Afghanistan, because that will have serious ramifications for Pakistan. [The TTP's reemergence] is evidence of that," Masood said.
