12 sentenced to death for killing law chamber clerk in Bangladesh

A fast track court in Bangladesh on October 21 has reportedly sentenced twelve people to death over the murder of a law chamber clerk. The twelve convicted killed the clerk with a spear over a land dispute back in 2015, cited reports. The deceased named Mubarak Hossain Bhuiyan reportedly constructed a room for an organisation for the disabled on land in Bajitpur in Bangladesh for which he was killed by the accused on October 22 four years ago. Bhuiyan was an assistant of a lawyer of the Dhaka session judge court.

According to the prosecution, he was killed by the convicts following an enmity over the ownership of a piece of land in Bajitpur Upazila of Kishoreganj.

Four of 12 convicts absconding

As per a Bangladeshi news website, the Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 Judge Monir Kamal announced the verdict on Monday, sentencing 12 people to death and two others to one-year imprisonment each. The prosecutors also acquitted another person named Prothom Alo. According to Dhaka police, at least four of the 12 convicts who have been sentenced to death are absconding. Moreover, the convicts have been asked to pay a monetary penalty worth Taka 20,000 (USD 236), each.

Victim's brother filed the case

As per reports, Mubarak Hossain Bhuiyan's brother filed a case against the 15 accused in the murder case. A chargesheet was filed on January 2, 2017, by the investigation officer. The judges reportedly handed down the verdict after examining 31 witnesses and other documents. A minor who was amongst the convicts has been shifted to the juvenile justice court.
