The sound of applause and whistles reverberated across Brussels on Monday evening as residents thanked key workers on the frontline against the new coronavirus.

Every day at 8pm local time (1900GMT) Belgians applaud and cheer from their windows and balconies to pay tribute to those continuing to work.

As of Monday Belgium has reported 20,814 coronavirus cases and 1,632 deaths.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.
