Bhutan PM Lotay Tshering hails India's leadership in regional & global affairs, says 'ties define true friendship'

As Prime Minister Modi embarked on a two-day visit to neighbouring Bhutan, PM of Bhutan Lotay Tshering said that it was an honour to welcome him

As Prime Minister Modi embarked on a two-day visit to neighbouring Bhutan, PM of Bhutan Lotay Tshering said that it was an honour to welcome him. Speaking at the event in Simtokha Dzong, Semtokha alongside PM Modi, he said: "India and Bhutan may vary in size but our beliefs, values and motivation are common. Today, I am overwhelmed with the sense pride that the two countries are living the definition of true friendship."

Recalling PM Modi's visit in 2014, Bhutan PM said: "On his (PM Modi) first visit to Bhutan in 2014, I remember him saying that Bhutan & India are close not because we have open borders, but because we have opened our hearts to each other. Your visit this time shows how much you meant it. Thank you for accepting our invitation and coming here again. Monarch deeply cherishes the friendship and that's why he calls it unique."

The Bhutanese PM further hailed India's leadership in the region and in global affairs and extended its unwavering support. It went on to state that Bhutan is happy to contribute to the goal of a 5 trillion dollar economy that India has envisioned and it hopes that India becomes a superpower.

Bhutanese Prime Minister Lotay Tshering received PM Modi at the airport and the Prime Minister was accorded a guard of honour on his arrival. PM Modi took to Twitter and thanked PM of Bhutan for the ceremonial welcome. In what was most appreciated by the Bhutanese counterpart of PM Modi was that he tweeted in Bhutanese after his arrival. He called PM Modi as an inspiring leader who embodies courage, compassion and conviction, and leads the world’s largest democracy. Prime Minister Modi received a rousing reception from the Indian community.

The Prime Minister also said that Bhutan is blessed with natural beauty and wonderful people as he was received by people lined on the road waving Tricolour and Bhutanese flag.
