The number of deaths and confirmed cases of COVID-19  continues to grow in Brazil and so does the number of people affected by the economic crisis that has been deepened by the pandemic.

To help people overcome the situation, a group of volunteers distributed basic products to residents of the favela Manguinhos, in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday.

Rice, beans, oil, pasta, and cleaning products were given to dozens of families who have seen their incomes fall since the outbreak hit the country.

Rosana da Conceiçao is a 47 year-old cleaning lady.  She is in charge of five children, including her kids and nephews.

Being the only adult in the house and the only one working, she struggles to put food on the table every day.

Da Conceiçao used to earn about 35 US dollars per day cleaning houses, but since the pandemic, just a few clients call her, and her income fell to 13 US dollars per day.

"This (aid) is very important because everybody is going through a difficult situation due to the pandemic," she said.

The independent worker said that worse than suffering an economic crisis is getting sick.

Asked if she was scared of being infected with COVID-19 she said "God save me!! We take all measures, we wear mask, alcohol gel, clean everything. I don't want to think about that!"

The economic crisis has forced some mayors and governors to begin planning a partial opening of the commerce and other activities, something criticized by experts.

Brazil registered 27,878 deaths and more than 465,000 confirmed cases by Friday, it has the world's second highest number of cases after the United States.

In Rio de Janeiro, where the public health system is under huge pressure, more than 5,000 people have died.

Experts say the lack of tests makes it impossible to know the exact number of victims and people infected.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough, that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and could lead to death.
