Bulgaria's embattled prime minister Boyko Borissov offered Friday to step down if legislators approve his plans for the election of a grand national assembly to push through constitutional amendments.

He said he would quit on the same day that parliament decided on such a move.

In a televised address to the nation on Friday, Borissov tried to appease protesters who have been on the streets for a second month to demand his government and the chief prosecutor resign.

They have been accused of links to the mafia, corrupt practices and suppressing freedom of speech.

Borissov proposed measures to make the work of parliament more efficient by halving the number of lawmakers and imposing stricter accountability on the chief prosecutor.

Government opponents rejected the plans as panicked attempts to stay in power until the end of his term next March.
