The governor of Phuket announced a one-day exception to its lockdown on Tuesday, allowing people to travel back-and-forth for a day on a case-by-case basis via the Tha Chat Chai checkpoint.

The island of Phuket closed all land and sea entry and exit points until April 30 and Phuket Governor Phakaphong Tavipatana said a ban on air travel will start on April 10.

The streets of the popular resort are nearly empty as the city implemented stricter measures to contain the spread of COVID-19.

The government also closed all bars, restaurants and public venues and urged the public not leave their homes between 8pm (1300 GMT) and 3am (2000 GMT).

Phuket's land travel ban, which became effective on Monday, will still allow transport of food and essential items, emergency vehicles and vehicles carrying publications.

Ships are banned from entering and leaving Phuket's international port, with exceptions for cargo ships, which can unload their cargo, but not allow crew to disembark before leaving as soon as possible.

As of Tuesday, Phuket has 69 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and could lead to death.
