Chileans took to the streets on the outskirts of Santiago on Tuesday to urge the government to provide families in need with aid, including food and other basic essentials.

Residents of the 'May 17' informal settlement say the economic fallout from the pandemic has hit them especially hard, and being able to provide food has become a challenge.

"There is a lack of food, there is a lot of unemployment, the people that live here in the settlement are people that work by the day," said local resident Pamela.

In order to have food, residents have set up a soup kitchen.

People banged pots and chanted to bring attention to their demands.

Chile has the third-highest number of coronavirus cases in the region, after Brazil and Peru.

It has had almost 80,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19, and just over 800 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.

An average of 4,000 new infections are being reported daily. About 15% of the cases require hospitalization.
