The fate of the proposal to designate Pakistan-based terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed's chief Masood Azhar as a global terrorist by the UN Security Council will be known in less than 24 hours when the deadline to raise objections to the bid expires. The proposal to designate Azhar under the 1267 Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee of the UN Security Council was moved by France, UK and the US on February 27.

As all eyes are on China, which has in the past blocked India's bids to get Azhar listed as a UN-designated global terrorist. When asked about China's stand on the matter, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said that the "solution that is acceptable to all sides is conducive for resolving the issue".

"On the issue I want to say that China always adopts a responsible attitude, engage in consultation with various parties properly deal with this issue. The discussion, I want to say must follow the rules and procedures and relevant bodies and only the solution that is acceptable to all sides is conducive for resolving the issue".

The JeM, headed by the 50-year-old Azhar, carried out many terror strikes in India and was involved in the attack on Parliament, the Pathankot air force base, army camps in Jammu and Uri, and the latest suicide attack on CRPF in Pulwama which claimed the lives of 40 personnel.

As per reports, United States, United Nation and France are planning to move a fresh proposal at the UNSC to list Azhar as a global terrorist.

Reacting to the development, US Deputy Spokesperson of the state department Robert Palladino said, "We will continue to work with the sanctions committee to ensure that the list is updated and that it’s accurate."

"Azhar is the founder and the leader of the JeM, and he meets the criteria for designation by the United Nations," Robert Palladino told reporters at his daily news conference.

Once recognised under the United Nations terror list, Masood will face a global travel ban and assets freeze. The listing will also help India proving how Pakistan has been an epicenter for hatching terrorist plans.
