Patients who have recovered from a viral outbreak are donating their plasma to aid those in serious conditions across China, state media reported on Monday.

Convalescent plasma therapy is an important method for effectively treating patients with severe and critical symptoms, said the National Health Commission (NHC).

China's Central Television (CCTV) showed the process of collecting blood and separating the plasma from it in the southwestern city of Chongqing on Monday.

A 49-year-old woman known by her surname Shu, was confirmed to have COVID-19 on 28 January and was discharged from hospital on 6 February after her recovery, CCTV said.

Another woman, from Xiangtan of Hunan Province and known by her surname Li, was confirmed to have the disease on January 24 and was cured and discharged on 2 February.

"We should do what we can to make a small contribution and hand down the care for other people," Li said, speaking to CCTV.

She donated 400ml of plasma at Xiantan Central Hospital on Monday.

The hospital told CCTV that the plasma from the first donor on February has been used on a severe case with good results.

The government has called upon cured patients to donate plasma as initial results had indicated the effectiveness of convalescent plasma-derived therapeutic products in curing infected patients in severe and critical conditions.
